Music and the Web
There is a distinct lack of variety in the music industry in Hong Kong. Varieties of Canto-Pop make up the majority of mainstream music. This is inconsistent with the international music scene where music lovers are able to experience different musical styles such as Rock, Metal, Grunge, Garage, Hip Hop, Jungle, Blues and Jazz. Much of this has been pushed underground in Hong Kong with performances for local musicians being held in bars and clubs. Through the use of new technology, the way in which music is being distributed and heard is now changing throughout the World. Although much of the power within the record industry is still held by record labels, people are now looking to new media and web technology to discover new musical talent. In conjunction with the determination of new bands and performers trying to break into the industry, there is a definite demand for a new way of music distribution especially in Hong Kong. The web has begun to act as the vehicle in which this distribution will be able to take place. Musicians can now enable a wider audience to be able to listen to their music. Through new sites on the web, musicians can upload their music, delivering it to a local and global audience. Listeners are able to review music and give constructive feedback to the band. The bands get exposure and listeners are able to hear new talent with different musical styles to what record labels are currently promoting and pushing. |
